Defending the Second Amendment

Our Founders passionately fought for the right of individual Americans to keep and bear arms, and formally recognized this right as they convened to draft our Constitution and its Bill of Rights. Unfortunately, many in Congress no longer share the vision of our Founders and regularly attempt to diminish this right.

On two critical occasions, Dr. Coburn has prevented law-abiding Americans from losing their right to keep and bear arms.

When Federal Government bureaucrats imposed a ban on guns in national parks, Dr. Coburn succeeded in getting an amendment enacted that leaves access to guns up to state law [Section 512 of Public Law 111-24]. This new law will bring the National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service in line with policies already in place for other large federal land management agencies.

And when a registry to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally unstable would have deprived virtually all military veterans wounded in the line of duty from possessing firearms, Dr. Coburn won concessions from the sponsors of the registry to protect the rights of the men and women who have made sacrifices on behalf of their fellow Americans.

Dr. Coburn was also a strong supporter of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act enacted into law in 2005 that will protect gun makers from frivolous lawsuits brought by the anti-Second Amendment lobby intended to drive then out of business.

Dr. Coburn continues his fight to uphold the rights of law abiding gun owners by supporting national reciprocity for concealed carry permit holders and a repeal of restrictive gun laws in Washington, DC that leave its residents defenseless against armed criminals.
