Dr. James Dobson Endorses Coburn
Dear Friend,
In the course of my professional career in defense of families, I have had a chance
to get to know some of our nation's leading political figures. The one who has impressed
me most, however, is not a professional politician at all; he is a family doctor from
Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Dr. Tom Coburn was so concerned about the direction our country was taking that
he decided to go to Washington to help make a difference. Elected to Congress in the
historic class of 1994, he vowed to be a citizen-legislator serving no more than three
terms. He not only kept that promise, but he made every day count during his six years in
Congress.
Dr. Coburn led the way on numerous health issues, including a dramatic revision
of our nation's failed approach to the AIDS epidemic. He was a courageous and effective
voice for fiscal responsibility on this and other important issues. And, above all, he was
the single best leader I ever worked with on the critical moral and family issues that have
been at the heart of my own work.
After his wonderful term of service in congress, Dr. Coburn returned home to the
full-time practice of medicine and to enjoy his grandchildren. But now, the call to duty in
Washington has presented itself again. One of Oklahoma's U.S. Senators, Don Nickles,
is retiring from office this year, and people from across the state and throughout the
nation have beseeched Dr. Coburn to become a candidate for that office.
In spite of a great deal of reluctance to leave the community he loves for a second
time, Tom Coburn is answering that call. He is a candidate for the open Senate seat from
Oklahoma in 2004. He started this race late and far behind in competition with
formidable and well-funded opponents in both the primary and general elections.
Tom Coburn is an exceptional man. I love him as a friend and admire him as a
statesman. I believe that his presence in the United States Senate will make a significant
difference for the future of our country. Speaking as a private individual and not on
behalf of the organization I lead, let me say that I hope you will consider voting for this
man of deep convictions about the things that matter most. It is my sincere opinion that if
you care about the future of the family and about the traditional moral principles on
which the nation was founded, you should consider helping to elect Dr. Tom Coburn to
the U.S. Senate.
-- James C Dobson, Ph.D.
